Why should married couples be apart during Aadi Maasam ?
This is a common phrase among South Indians that married couples should be separated during the month of Aadi. Have you ever wondered why such sayings are said so? To understand in-depth the reason behind this saying we must understand the Tamil calendar and weather conditions (see the figure below). If married couples copulate at the month of Aadi and successfully impregnated the women, the women need to undergo her pregnancy period for nine months which are (1)Aadi, (2)Puratasi, (3)Aipasi, (4)Kartigai, (5) Markali, (6) Thai, (7)Maasi,(8)Pangguni and (9) Chittirai.

As the figure above you can understand that the woman would have undergone her labor in the month of Chithirai and healing in the months of Vaigasi onward. Whenever women naturally give birth tearing her genital is unavoidable and she losses a lot of blood during the labor process itself. Since she undergoes healing during the Summer period, the healing process itself is going to be hard due to the sweat produced by our body itself. If genital were something that we can expose and heal, it would be easier, however, it is the contrary in reality. So that is why during the month of Aadi, married couples are separated. If ever you ask someone why do married couples need to be separated during this particular month you may hear a lot of folk story, instead of this logical explanation behind this custom.
